We need a better way to conduct our political debates where real information and well constructed argument can engage our community in a meaningful way in the decisions that impact our lives. Here is a thoughtful presentation by Professor Michael Sandel of Harvard on why this is important and how it can be brought about.
During the Local Council elections in November 2008 the Macedon Ranges Residents Association requested all candidates to answer a detailed questionnaire on mainly planning matters. Following this they published their ratings on each candidate. The ratings bore little resemblance to the candidates published material and the Association refused to publish the criteria applied to determine the ratings.
Our community should demand all associations be open and transparent with all their political activities.
