Collaboration is all about creating a productivity dividend. Through building trust teams can achieve results faster. Distrust costs. It costs because other parties to the activity are required to take time to undertake activities to validate, defend or protect their interests. So trust helps to achieve things more quickly creating a dividend to share.

Online collaboration presents two particular issues:

  1. Who am I dealing with online? Can I trust the other party?
  2. The online tools are not yet powerful enough to allow collaborative engagement as well as we can achieve in the real world
